I remember several years ago when we found out we were pregnant with June, how suddenly everyone was asking what her nursery theme was going to be! And of course, I was like, "I have no idea. But probably cats. And colors. And things that are hidden in my basement because I thrifted them well before I was ever even pregnant." Not the easiest theme to find Pinterest inspiration for, but in the end, it worked out well.

Fast forward three years to when we found out we were expecting little Sunny, and instantly I was like "Gah! A theme!?! I don't have a theme." But then I realized something about myself -- that's just not how my brain works. I love pulling together all sorts of pieces and decades, in different styles, and making them feel like one cohesive room. I just like too many different things to narrow it down like that!

Sunny's nursery is very small. Only 56sq. feet to be exact. And so, I started by deciding upon the three main items: the crib, the rug, and the chair.

I knew right away that I wanted to get a mini crib, simply because a standard sized crib wouldn't leave room for much else! Enter: Babyletto. I fell in love with their line of Origami Mini Cribs. (We got the washed natural color.) I even found a glider from them that I might love even more than the crib. They're both fantastic and very reasonably priced!

Next on the list was a rug. I wanted the rug to become one of the primary focal points of the room, as well as provide one of the main colors I'd be using. I also knew I wanted to be able to wash the rug because if there's one thing I learned from having my first kid it's "always buy the item that's the easiest to clean." I ended up choosing a rug from Lorena Canals and have nothing but good things to say about it. I bet I've washed it six or more times in the last few months and with each wash, it comes out looking brand new and is even a tiny bit softer. Win, win!

The rest of the room slowly fell into place as I realized I wanted a combination of natural woods (hello Scandinavian vibes!), black and white patterns (minimally modern), handmade artwork (nice and cozy) and a little touch of "whatever else I see at Target and think 'That's it! I have to have it'!"

There is, of course, a few nods to Sunny's name with things like the hand-drawn Smiley Sunshine I made for above the changing table (which you can download and print for yourself, btw!), the clay rainbow family I made for her bookshelf (DIY here), and the cloud pillows.

After deciding to create my own wallpaper of sorts out of washi tape, I felt it had a slight 90's vibe to it. So I dug out a vintage black and white daisy patterned tray from my basement (which I seriously think I bought like 5+ years ago) and added a vase for fresh daisies next to the changing table.

To this day I love sloths. I just think they're amazing. And cute. And can totally relate to all the feels Kristen Bell felt that one time on Ellen. When I came across the giant Sloth print online, I didn't even hesitate to get it. It's the perfect little touch of weirdness that I think every room should have. Look closely and you just might see my vintage sloth Beanie Baby sitting on a shelf somewhere. (Fingers still crossed that it'll make me millions someday. 😉)

Also, how delightful is this mobile from Bella Bloom Kids!? It's quite literally the perfect combo of all the things I was going for: a touch Scandinavian, a little bit modern, and handmade! Sunny loves laying underneath it as it sways back and forth from the breeze of her fan.

I really enjoyed creating this little space for Sunny --- our "Sunny Kaboo", "Sunny Bunny", "SunBun", or my personal favorite "Fat Sunny."

I am such a firm believer that the homes we live in affect us on a deeper level than we realize. And that investing our time and efforts into our homes -- to make them comforting and safe and inspiring and our own -- will never be time wasted.
